breaky-poo.

Well, you MAY have noticed that I haven't been around this week, seeing as I didn't put a new deal up Monday. (no worries, I'm just gonna leave 10% off EVERYTHING up a bit longer... like, until I decide to do something different, longer)

I'm ALSO going to say that I won't be around for a bit either. I'm takin me a blog-cation. I know... you'll miss me deeply. Tell me all about it and make me feel loved :-P

HOWEVER, when I DO come back, HOPEFULLY (that was a lot of capitals), there will be fun photos of all those cool preggers outfits I made ;) ;) ;). Right!?!  And hopefully I'll be back in the sewing mood again so I can continue to add to them (especially since I have a pile of "refashions" that's about a foot and a half high waiting for me to experiment).

So have a happy 4th everyone, and I'll see ya when I see ya!!

Bedding

SO, I've been thinking about bedding for Bean lately... of course, we don't yet know if Bean is a "he" or a "she" (which is part of why I want to think about it now... to see what "gender neutral" things I can find before the poor girl is pinked out totally, or the little boy is enveloped COMPLETELY in blue.)

And this is what I discovered... I LOVE this bedding set (which is allegedly gender neutral)... but I think I'd only be able to put a little girl in it.
Actually, I should re-phrase. I LOVE the pattern on the blanket and crib sheet! I'd want the bumpers to be that pattern... but they aren't. They're striped. And you can't PUT a blanket on a baby in a crib. And I don't care about the "dust ruffle" either. So since I LOVE this pattern, but I can't get what I want in it... I started thinking about MAKING my own crib set. So I started from scratch and found the "color pallets" below... but am still IN LOVE with this one... so I'm contemplating buying the "Toddler Bed Set" which will have a fitted sheet (that still fits cribs, because they're the same sized mattress) and using the top sheet (or the blanket honestly) and re-fashion it into bumpers. Who knows what I'd do with the included pillow case, but it's just so dern cute!!

Now... on to the more logical "make it yourself" options. I'd probably make "quilt as you go" bumpers and fitted sheets and stop there (maybe some curtains too I guess...) All these fabrics are flannel (a prime choice for a winter baby, and apparently, crib sheets in general)

This would be the gender-neutral-to-the-max version. The outside of the bumper would be the gingham patterns, and the inside would be the letters probably, along with fitted sheets in the feet, letters and the "solid gingham" ones.

This is the "boy's polka-dot version. I may come up with another potential boy version... there were some cute argyle patterns I thought were adorable! (And would work well with just plain white sheets) That were a bit bolder. I like the idea of polkadots... but Hubby said they were too "girly" - I think these are very nice boy-polkadots!!

And this is the uber-girl version. I'm pretty much in love with those little birds too... can you MAKE flannel curtains? Is that OK? In this one, the bird pattern would be the backing of the bumpers, and all the rest would be "quilt-as-you-go" on the outside. Doesn't that just look so cute though?!?!

Needless to say, my "gender neutrality" doesn't seem to be working well... and after finding that bird pattern, I REALLY can't decide if I'd use the 1st or the last for a little girl (probably the 1st though... I really don't want to go uber-pink on the potential little girl. But those birdies!!! Maybe she'll just need a swaddling cloth or a car-seat-cover in those birdies...

What do you think?? (other than that I've gone crazy)

Disclaimer: I'm aware of the "risk" of using bumpers in a crib, however, as long as they are not super cushy (pillow-like so that baby can squish it's face in it), and tightly attached to the crib, they are not dangerous to an infant. And please know that once Bean can stand/pull up on a table/the crib side/anything else... the bumpers will be removed. BEFORE then, however, they are useful to keep rolling children from knocking their noggins on the bars, or getting their cute little hands and feet wedged between them. If you want to comment about the use of bumpers in cribs... find a mother's forum someplace else ;). Thanks!!

I might not make it

That's right... I might not make it today. I'm sensing a 2pm bedtime this afternoon. I stayed up WAY too late on the phone with my bestie last night (but we haven't TALKED in a while - just G-Chat-ed, so it's OK). And then this morning? I randomly woke up at 6:30... ok, I probably had to pee, but when I woke up, I realized that I MIGHT be walking with my neighbor at 7... so I shot her an e-mail to confirm (hopefully), got ready (not really... I'm totally walking in my PJ's today, since I essentially slept in workout gear last night) and ate breakfast. Well... we're about to walk NOW... at 8. And get home, just in time for me to go to the Thrift Shop... which I'm "Opening" this morning.

Go to bed 2 hours late? Wake up 2 hours early? Do TWO energy taxing things in ONE day? I'm totally setting myself up to eat a sandwich tonight for dinner. Good thing Hubby won't be here... he's not a fan of "dinner sammy's"

I should probably get those sneakers on (and attempt to stop yawning...)

Registering.

So even though I'm a mere 18 weeks along... I've been researching like mad "baby things" and adding ALL SORTS of stuff to my registry (that is still not public... partially because I've been adding ALL SORTS of things to my registry... not all of which I need or even really want).

Anyway, I've "checked off" a LOT of things on the "checklists" I've found (not through stores, but other mom-blogs), and decided that I should PROBABLY go through and start taking AWAY some of the things that even I would consider excess. But I'm not sure I can do it, lol. The ones that are giving me the hardest time? Pacefiers. Why? Well... look.

As hysterical as all of these are... some have got to go, or I'll end up with all these pacifiers (that Bean might not even LIKE) and no bottles.

ME!??! In a PHOTO?!?! Don't get excited.

So.... I've been ATTEMPTING to make knit clothes for summer that will accommodate a growing belly. I've been TALKING about these projects occasionally on here, but not showing any pictures of them... because... I'm not huge yet... so while in real life I feel like I look pregnant... in photos, I still feel fat. I definitely am pregnant, and you could SURELY tell when I tried on a swimsuit yesterday... but in my "good till 9 months" clothes? lets just say they'll also be good at disguising the post-baby-pooch. I also haven't shown any photos, because none of my clothing attempts has turned out QUITE as fabulous as I originally imagined them. They're all "public wear worthy"... just not super fabulous. Maybe once I deem myself "huge" (and/or my family finally sees me at a point where they can TELL I'm preggers), I'll do a huge post of all the clothes I've made and you can sit in amazement at my transformation from "girl who needed to lose a LITTLE weight, but still rocked it" to "DANG! She's PREGNANT!"

Needless to say, when I find a great preggers article of clothing for under $20 now... I snag it. Today... I snagged 3. At Sam's Club. Yup... apparently... Sam's Club is my preferred pregnancy clothing shopping location. I now have 4 (count that... FOUR) Sam's Club articles that I really like and are perfect for my pregnant belly!

So what if two of them were sold as pajamas? Throw the accompanying headband (I think?) around my empire waist, and I think I've got a pretty cute sundress! It's long enough that I COULD wear it alone... and short enough that capri leggings (my pant of choice lately) will look adorable underneath too.

I guess if the clothes at JC Penny in the juniors section look like underwear and pajamas... there's no reason why the pajama's at Sam's can't look like cute junior's clothing...

(please pardon the lack of makeup and "it's just humid enough" escaped hair and nasty flash-lines... all self portraits are taken on the camera that's recording my "growth"... a project that will be finished and shown after I've shown off Bean's cute face :-P... but yes, this is how I look when I leave the house.)

And yes... this is as close to a "preggers" shot as you're getting now. I *heart* that you can't REALLY tell I've popped... but... that's why you got a front-shot... not a side shot :-P.

Food Friday - Zebra Bread and Pasta Salad

The other day, I made bread from my favorite recipe (Crusty White Bread) in Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day... what I didn't expect however, was to pick up the POWDERED SUGAR from the cabinet instead of the flour when it came time to cloak it...

Well, I eventually figured out what I'd done (and used real flour too), but it was too late... I went with a "well... lets see how this works" attitude, and discovered that powdered sugar (probably sugar in general) doesn't really appreciate 450* steam...  but the bread tasted fine (kind of like kabob's... you can TASTE the char, but it doesn't bother you?). Hubby said he even LIKED it! However... I've named it "Zebra Bread"... because, well... see for yourself!

And for dinner last night, I made Balsamic Tomato Mozzarella Spinach Chicken Pasta Salad. I should PROBABLY work on the name of it... but it was pretty yummy!

I have NO measurements at ALL for this... BUT, the ingredients are...

Mini Bow Ties (or any pasta that makes you happy)
Cherry Tomatoes cut in half
Spinach, ripped and wilted on the hot bow ties
Mozzarella Balls (I got the tiniest ones so there would be more bites with cheese :-P)
Chunked, leftover Rotisserie Chicken (from those $6.00 ones at the store?)
Olive Oil
Balsamic Vinegar
Salt
Pepper

I know... there were a bunch of "surprise ingredients" in there, lol. It really should be left to sit for a while to let all the flavors meld, and I think next time, I'd roast the tomatoes first too. But it was a delicious summer meal that you can eat cold, and even use as a side-dish at a picnic (it's still yummy without the chicken too, by the way).

An alternative dressing to the "balsamic vinaigrette" is Italian Dressing. My preggers-ness didn't want it TOO flavorful yesterday, so I went with the balsamic (I really didn't add much) but I did "try" both 0:-P I'm sure hubby would have liked it better with the Italian (or more balsamic).

I served it with some "fake garlic bread" too... a few slices of the "zebra bread" doused with olive oil (and rubbed together, cause I'm weird like that) and a shake of garlic powder and dried basil. MMMMM MMMM good.

Thing Thursday - Baby Presents!!

So within the past few weeks, THREE friends have had little munchkins :-P All little baby boys, and all SUPER adorable. And because I'm fairly impatient... I'm going to show you all what I'm giving each of these munchkins... but in the event that their mommy's read my blog... I'm not telling who's getting what :-P

SO:

A Merry Go Round Blanket (Crocheted) from Red Heart

It's a simple pattern, and really fun. There's so many ways you can change it up with different yarn colors, etc. It's made from Lion Brand Yarn's Baby Soft Sportweight yarn (100% machine washable and dryable - important here people...) and I got all nifty and used "Baby White Pompadour" which is a STRAIGHT yarn, but with one strand being a reflective shiny white. Too bad I learned the hard way that they don't sell it at MY Michaels. Ah well. HOWEVER, Since I don't like gauging, or really following directions, my blanket is not made TO the pattern... but it'll give you the overall idea on HOW to make this blanket. I started this one a LONG time ago... I'm not a very diligent "hooker" :-P

A Stuffed Turtle (from Make It and Love It)
This was made of cotton fabric I had left over from other projects. The red and green were from a gator backpack I never finished (and never had an intended recipient for anyway, so it's all good) and the blue is leftovers from my bean bag chair! All the pattern pieces fit together on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper (and it's free on her blog), so it's PERFECT for scraps you may have lying around. I WANTED to do the shell in Red, Yellow, Green and Blue... but I apparently have no yellow cotton in my house. I even contemplated cutting up something... to no avail though...  It still came out super cute! It doesn't take MUCH stuffing (although Make It and Love It stuffed theirs MUCH more than I did... I like squishy toys :-P) All-in-all... it probably took me maybe 2 hours? Not bad, considering I definitely didn't just "sit down and sew it."

A Car Seat Canopy (reversible even!) from Sweet 'n' Sassy Girls: A Mom Blog
(A special thank you to the Thrift Shop for letting me borrow a car-seat off the rack to take this FAB photo.
Yes, I'm aware it's a little blurry... it was time to go home, lol)

I really liked this project. Next time, I may not make it reversible, but solely because it's SO much easier to not have to line up the little tabs on either side and sew them together (aka, I'm lazy). The other side is a solid navy blue. It's made of seer sucker, since it's a summer baby - this way, Mom will be able to keep the sun off munchkin (and dirty fingers, and sneezes and curious strangers), but baby will still stay nice and cool. Having thrown it over my head... it's kinda nice in there! :-P  This one sewed up pretty quickly too - again, about 2 hours for the first go-round!  In fact, this MAY become my "standard 'welcome to the world' gift"... It used 2 yards of fabric, and basically 4 inches of velcro. Bean may get one of these with fleece on the inside and "windbreaker" material on the outside. You could even make it with just ONE yard of fabric if it was fleece (doesn't need to be hemmed) or if you hemmed or bound all the edges somehow (oooh... crochet bind the edge maybe?)

All that's left now is to write these mommies some notes and take a trip to the post office! Which means I better get moving, since it closes in an hour...

Anyone out there been doing any fun projects lately? Post a link in the comments so I can check it out!

Busy Day!!

Yesterday was a busy day around here!! And I'm a LITTLE surprised at the fact that I woke up with hubby, and after 30 minutes of lying in bed trying to go back to sleep... decided to GET UP. Wha-huh?!? Ok, so it's 6:45, I've read all my e-mails, checked all my blogs, done a few internet searches, had my breakfast and am writing today's blog post. Weird.

So yesterday... I had planned on sewing. Baby presents, maternity clothes, alterations... it was a "craft room" day... until I randomly decided (ok, not really randomly, but close enough) that I needed to make spaghetti sauce (I buy the giant cans of sauce from Sam's Club and make my own sauce, cause it's what keeps hubby happy). Which of course, meant that I needed to make bread (this WAS unexpected) to go with the obvious dinner choice: Spaghetti with sausage. And my dad-in-law wanted to WATCH me make dough last time I was there... but we ran out of time, so I decided to do a "cooking video" (Very low-tech) of how I do it. Except my sound input was from the wrong spot... so it's really a silent movie with no written words to help out. Oh well... I'll have to try again when this batch of dough is gone. And THEN, a friend came by to visit (and pick some stuff up) and suddenly, lunch was late. So I grabbed a PB&J and scarfed it down... but needed... SUGAR!! So I made cookies, like I've been meaning to do for days (but was also unexpected). I chose a half recipe of In Katrina's Kitchen's Award Winning Cookies Recipe. Very yummy. Best chocolate chip cookies I'VE turned out (they are not my forte).
But P.S. They're the same recipe as Nestle Toll House on the back of the bag... with an extra half cup of flour... for future reference. However, I think the extra flour helped make them not totally flat, like I usually do.

Don't they look delicious? (borrowed from her blog post)

I did still get the latest baby-present finished... and hopefully I'll figure out how to take a picture of it soon. Warning: this may require a trip to Target with my camera. Can't wait to see the looks on people's faces, haha!

Maybe today I'll get some sewing done... of course, that will be around grocery shopping, yoga, watering the garden, making corned beef and soda bread for dinner, and folding laundry...

Thing Thursday - Cool Blog, cooler giveaways :-P

SO, I follow this blog called "The Blog Guidebook."  It's pretty schnazzy... about a year ago, this lady decided it would be a good idea to have a "phonebook" of blogs (kind of like the yellowpages), AND she was awesome enough to actually START one. So basically, you can go to this blog, find the category you want your blog in, and submit yourself, in hopes that more people will find you - FOR FREE. We all know how much I like free stuff, right?!?

WELL, they're "Turning 1" this month, and have decided to host a 30 Days of Giveaways to celebrate (using it's own blog, so as to not get everything super confused. AND, what I like the MOST about this giveaway, is that if you write a blog post ABOUT The Blog Guidebook and 30 Days of Giveaways, you can enter for EVERY DAY of the giveaways ALL AT ONCE! (There are more giveaways each day, by the way, that you can comment on to enter as well)

So you should go check it out, and enter along with me. I'll tell what I win if you tell what you do! :-P

Wordless-ish Wednesday

100* at noon, "unofficially summer"... and there's marble sized ice chunks on the deck. Wha huh?!?

(and yes, I realize these chunks don't look too big...
but I DID wait until they were DONE falling to go out and take the picture)
